Forest department officials said notices to seek sanctions have been issued in accordance with the Forest Conservation Act, 1980 which prohibits encroachment upon designated forest land.
“Patches of forest land are being used for non-forest purposes without obtaining clearance from the central government. The defaulters will also have to pay for compensatory forestation,” said B Prabhakar, district forest officer, Gautam Budh Nagar.
Apart from clearance from the forest department, the defaulters have also been directed to pay the present value of the land to the state government and funds towards compensatory forestation to the Compensatory Afforestation Fund Management and Planning Authority.
“The state forest department would use the funds thereof for plantation drives or for developing infrastructure for the department,” added Prabhakar.
According to the forest department, land on either side of the highways is designated forest areas and belong to the forest department.
